Trainer Joe Janiak believes Takeover Target has been fairly dealt with by the New Zealand handicapper after being given 61.5kg for the Telegraph Handicap.

But Janiak is yet to confirm if the international sprint champion will run in the Group One 1200-metre race at Trentham, Wellington, on January 17.

"It's fair enough," Janiak said.

"We'll decide over the next couple of days, once we go over our options and have a look at the field.

"But he's more than a reasonable chance of running."

While Takeover Target has been given topweight, fellow Australian hopeful Turffontein has 55kg with Randwick trainer Anthony Cummings keen to send the tough-as-teak sprinter.

Takeover Target scored his 19th career win in the Group Three Scahill Stakes in Perth, taking his overall earnings past $5.5 million from 37 starts.

He has won in Japan, Singapore and England as well as Australia.

New Zealand authorities relaxed quarantine protocols last week, clearing the way for Takeover Target to race there.

Horses will be allowed to travel quarantine-free between Australia and New Zealand from January 5 under the new Import Health Standard introduced by the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
