Peter Snowden is comfortable with his decision to take a conservative approach with Group One winner Denman heading towards next month's Australian Guineas at Flemington.

Snowden admitted Saturday's Group One weight-for-age Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield was under consideration for the colt but he decided it was more advantageous to avoid a "gut-buster" and run him in the Listed Wellington Racing Club Stakes (1400m).

"We looked at it (the Orr) but his main target is in a month's time and you can't be sidetracked along the way," Snowden said.

He said Denman, winner of seven of his nine starts, still had a long campaign ahead of him with hopes that he will train on to the Sydney carnival, and that he was still on an upward fitness curve.

"We do not give him any gut-busters on the way through," Snowden said.

"To race at that level (in the Orr) against those horses he would really have to be at his best."

Snowden said Denman recovered quickly from his first-up win over Carrara in last month's Listed Zeditave Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield and had trained on well.

"We just want to keep the momentum going," Snowden said.

Denman, with Kerrin McEvoy on board, faces just six rivals on Saturday and is almost unbackable at $1.30 with TAB Sportsbet.

Carrara, who was 1-1/2 lengths behind Denman last start, is at $5.50 and is the only other runner under double-figure odds.

Snowden said Denman would have one more run after Saturday leading in to the Group One Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 6.
