Promising stayer Buccaneers Prize continues to please David Payne ahead of his next assignment at Canterbury where the four-year-old headlines a promising team for the Rosehill trainer.

Buccaneers Prize lines up in Wednesday's Freeway Hotel Texas Poker Handicap (2800m) and comes into the race a week after running a neck second to Superreact at Randwick over 2400 metres.

Payne believes the big-striding Montjeu gelding will thrive over the extra distance.

"He just stays all day this horse and I'm expecting him to go very well," Payne said.

"He's only a young horse and I don't expect him to really hit his straps until next year, so this year it's all about stepping through his grades and this is another step which I think he has a good chance of taking.

"He did nothing wrong last time and just ran into a more experienced and seasoned horse on the day but once he strengthens next year he will be a very nice horse."

Buccaneers Prize is having his 12th start and his only win came over 2300 metres at Newcastle in March.

He then started in the Group One AJC Australian Derby (2400m) in April when he beat only one runner home in the race won by Roman Emperor.

Chitu Ma opens the batting for Payne in the Freeway Hotel Handicap (1580m).

The Cape Cross filly has not raced since her all-the-way win over 1550 metres at Canterbury in May.

"This race is a little bit tougher but she's returned in good order," Payne said.

"She'll go for some of the fillies races if she measures up in this."

Chitu Ma is having her fifth start and her last-start victory broke her maiden status.

Stablemate Elucidation runs in the Freeway Republic Beer Handicap (1580m).

The Elusive Quality filly is having her second start after running eighth to Artistic Rock on debut at Randwick on July 25 over 1600 metres.

"She's got plenty of talent but she's still a baby and will need this experience," Payne said.

"She's got some promise as a stayer."

Payne is also represented by three-year-old Redoute's Choice gelding Well Handled who makes his debut in the Freeway Hotel Pool Comp Hcp (1200m).
