Mr Clangtastic has pulled up better than expected from his Colin Stephen Quality win but his chances of backing up in the Metropolitan Handicap remain up in the air.

The six-year-old scored his first win on a track better than dead in last Saturday's Group Three 2400-metre race at Randwick.

Despite Mr Clangtastic proving himself on top of the ground, trainer Marc Conners said he would not be taking any risks with the Caulfield Cup hopeful if the track was too firm for Saturday's 2400-metre feature at Randwick.

Conners hopes meteorologists' forecasts for rain on Friday and Saturday prove correct.

"We've still got the option of going to Melbourne the week after, so it's not a necessity of running this week I suppose," Conners said.

"But I've been keeping a close eye on the weather and it would be nice if the showers forecast do happen on Saturday.

"He's pulled up better than I thought he would."

Mr Clangtastic has won his last five starts including the Listed Wyong Cup two runs back.

Conners only made the decision to run the horse in the Colin Stephen early on race day.

"It was a concern going on a surface that he'd never won on but credit to the horse, he keeps overcoming hurdles every time we put them in front of him," Conners said.

"He's done so well."

The victory resulted in Mr Clangtastic being penalised a kilogram for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in which he now has 51kg in both races.

"He's pretty close to getting a run in the Caulfield Cup now," Conners said.

"People say he's not classy enough to win the Caulfield Cup but the horse doesn't know that.

"It definitely doesn't worry me what people say about him."

TAB Sportsbet has Mr Clangtastic as its $7 third favourite for the Metropolitan in the fixed odds market.

The Lee Freedman-trained Speed Gifted is the $4 favourite.

Former UK-based Speed Gifted was fourth to Red Lord in the Group Three Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on September 19.

The Gerald Ryan-trained last-start Kingston Town Stakes winner Ready To Lift is the second favourite for the Metropolitan at $5.

Mr Clangtastic is rated a $31 chance on TAB Sportsbet fixed odds for the Caulfield Cup on October 17.
