Melbourne visitor Kudeta has the chance to convince trainer Heath Conners he is worthy of a crack at stakes level in Tasmania when he runs at Rosehill on Saturday.

Conners will pay close attention to the five-year-old in the Spring Valley Smart Water Handicap (1500m) following his impressive second-up performance for third behind Informality and Theophorus at the same venue two weeks ago.

If Kudeta's can prove he is up to the task, Conners will take the Snowland gelding south for the $100,000 Tatts Group George Adams Plate (1600m) in Tasmania in February.

"The whole plan is, if he does well in his next couple of runs and comes up with the goods, he'll go to Tassie," Conners said.

"Especially with the Tasmanian Carnival, you can always get a little bit of a soft track down there as well."

Last start Kudeta overcame the widest barrier, 11, and came from last at the 400m to finish just over two lengths behind the winner.

Conners said given the wide barrier and it being the horse's second run after a three-month spell, it was a terrific result.

The Caulfield trainer was full of praise for jockey Peter Robl who reunites with Kudeta on Saturday.

"I told Peter (Robl) it is going to be hard for him because of the big jump," Conners said.

"The furthest he has run over is a mile so running 1500 metres second-up is an effort and I just said to him `you want to ride him nice and quiet and wait, wait, wait and right at the last minute let him work into the race.'

"Peter rode him exactly like that."

Kudeta has barrier eight and Conners expects the horse to be in a more prominent position than last start.

"He won't be as far back as he was the other day," he said.

"He is to be ridden quiet and from barrier eight, that's just perfect. He is going to end up a couple off the fence and just worse than mid-field which should be ideal."

Kudeta has been staying in Sydney with Conners' trainer brother Marc at Warwick Farm for the past few weeks.

In Melbourne, Conners gallops Kudeta in the reverse direction once a week.

Track manager Lindsay Murphy expects the Rosehill track to be a dead (5) on Saturday which will suit Kudeta with seven of his eight wins coming on rain-affected going.

Conners said it was Kudeta's performance on softer tracks which led him to choose Rosehill over the $150,000 Chester Manifold Stakes at Flemington.

"He does need a bit of give in the track," he said.

"And Flemington, you want to have an inch of rain the night before and you're not going to get it this time of year."
