A plan to consolidate a place for Jest Crewsin' in the ranks of Sydney's off-season stakes-class sprinters will begin in earnest at Randwick on Saturday.

Starting with the Listed June Stakes, trainer Jan Bowen has mapped out a sequence of black-type targets while her stable star remains under the handicapper's radar.

"It's a good time for him to be in form while he is down in the weights," Bowen said.

Courtesy of his Carrington Stakes victory, Jest Crewsin' is already a Listed race winner but he has been asked to carry just 53.5kg in the June Stakes (1100m).

"He gets into these races a lot better than the benchmark races where he will be asked to carry too much weight," Bowen said.

Jest Crewsin' steps up from a last-stride open class win over the June Stakes course on May 28 but Bowen believes the five-year-old is starting to come into his own.

"I rushed him to get him ready for the Scone carnival," she said.

"Looking back now the Scone race probably came two weeks too early for him."

Jest Crewsin' confirmed Bowen's thinking when he ran down the three-year-old Unanimously at Randwick last month.

Veteran jockey Robert Thompson's faultless navigational skills made the difference last time but Bowen says Jest Crewsin' is now going well enough to make his own luck.

"I don't like the horse getting back that far in his races but there wasn't much Robert could do," she said.

"As it turned out, he was able to save that little bit of ground on the turn.

"If he decided to make his run out wide we probably wouldn't have won."

Thompson, 53, has ridden more winners than any other jockey in Australian racing history.

Most of his victories have been on Hunter Valley tracks but recent winning rides in town on Rehandedjill and Jest Crewsin' confirmed he is still city-class.

"He's still among the best jockeys going around and the fact he doesn't push for rides makes his achievements even more remarkable," Bowen said.

Border Rebel and Pinwheel share 59.5kg topweight for the June Stakes.

However, the Tamworth-trained Border Rebel was a precautionary nomination for Randwick as he heads towards Saturday's Group One Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm.
