A mystery injury has robbed Epsom Handicap winner Captain Sonador of a possible trip to Hong Kong next month.

Trainer Roger Milne had X-rays taken of the four-year-old's off-foreleg on Sunday following his disappointing 13th to Kiwi star Wall Street in the Group One Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.

"Glen Boss felt he was a little scratchy in the run and he was vetted immediately after the race but they couldn't find anything wrong," Milne said.

"The vets couldn't find any lameness after the race but I couldn't accept that so I got him vetted myself and had some X-rays taken on Sunday.

"The X-rays are inconclusive. There's a grey area there which the vet can't determine.

"It could be a stress fracture but we're hoping it might be a bit of bone remodelling from a previous operation on his knee.

"Whatever it is he'll be X-rayed again in two weeks and that'll be too late for Hong Kong."

Milne said Captain Sonador was not lame whenever he walked or trotted but was unable to lengthen stride in the Emirates.

The Toowoomba trainer remains hopeful of getting the green light after further X-rays are taken to enable him to press on towards the Magic Millions Sprint at the Gold Coast in January and another trip to Sydney for the autumn carnival.

"He's having two or three weeks off and needs to get back on track again," Milne said.

"If it's what we're hoping it'll be quite manageable but I might have to change his racing routine.

"If he gets the all clear from the vet he can come back in time for the Magic Millions Sprint but I'll be guided by what the vet says as I'm still keen to go back to Sydney with him next year.

"He's virtually finished with racing in Queensland now with the exception of the Stradbroke as he'd get the grandstand every time he started."

Captain Sonador arrived in Sydney on Tuesday where he'll have a two-day stopover before continuing the journey back to his Toowoomba stables.

Milne had Captain Sonador inoculated in anticipation of heading overseas for the Group One Hong Mile at Sha Tin.

"I was led to believe he was going to get invited so I had him vaccinated for the trip to Hong Kong," he said.

Captain Sonador, a son of Shamardal, won last month's Group One Epsom Handicap at Randwick before Milne rolled the dice and sent him to Melbourne for Australia's weight-for-age championship, the Group One Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.

Captain Sonador may have been out of his depth when finishing eighth to So You Think in the Cox Plate but Milne saw plenty of merit in the performance which prompted him to press on to the Emirates Stakes.

"He didn't handle Moonee Valley and got on the wrong leg in the Cox Plate," Milne said.

"He also got a couple of bad bumps from Shoot Out and Whobegotyou."
