Victoria's heatwave has forced trainer Barry Baldwin to cancel Burdekin Blues' scheduled float trip from Brisbane ahead of his assignment in the Group One Lightning Stakes.

Burdekin Blues will still head to Melbourne for the 1000-metre feature on January 30 but Baldwin is hoping to organise a flight next week for the five-year-old.

"He was supposed to go down by float today but I decided to cancel the trip because it's too hot interstate," Baldwin said.

"It's 40 degrees in some places so I've put the trip back a week and will discuss it with his owner, Tom Sheahan, about flying him down.

"He can handle heat okay and he's very tough but the heat can stress any horse."

Baldwin rated Burdekin Blues a superior horse than when he was last in Melbourne when he won the Grazia Stakes (1100m) down the straight at Flemington on Oaks Day in November.

The five-year-old has raced twice since, scoring an easy victory in the Group Three George Moore Stakes (1200m) at Doomben last month before his sizzling win in the 900-metre Bat Out Of Hell Quality at the Gold Coast on January 2.

"He's a lot better horse now than when he was in Melbourne for the spring but it's a lot harder field he's up against in the Lightning," Baldwin said.

Baldwin is still reluctant to commit Burdekin Blues to the Group One Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington in March.

"He's capable of mixing it with the best sprinters in Australia over 1000 metres but not over 1200 metres," he said.

"At this stage I doubt he'll run in the Newmarket but he could run in either the Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield or William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley after the Lightning.

"After that he may go back to run in Sydney but he won't be around for the Brisbane winter carnival."

Meanwhile Baldwin's Magic Millions Classic placegetter Demanding Miss has been ruled out of the $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill in April.

X-rays taken from the Commands filly on Sunday found she was suffering from sesamoiditis.

"It's not serious and she's gone for a spell and won't run in the Golden Slipper," Baldwin said.

"With luck she'll be back for the winter and the Sires' Produce and T J Smith.

"She's well bred and is out of a half-sister to Angst so I'm quite confident she'll run 1600 metres in the TJ Smith.

Baldwin and jockey Chris Munce believe Demanding Miss should have run second to Military Rose in the Magic Millions Classic.

"Both Chris and I are adamant she should have run second in the Magic Millions after she was checked badly at the 800 metres and had to switch back to the inside," Baldwin said.
