Homesick trainer John McNair and star sprinter Hay List will return to NSW as soon as possible with the horse's Brisbane campaign over.

Hay List was the raging favourite for Saturday's Doomben 10,000 but was found to have a foot abscess on Friday, ruling him out of the Group One race.

Of more concern a day later was that Hay List developed symptoms of colic, possibly because of the strong antibiotics used to treat his foot.

McNair said the horse was a lot better on Monday but still not up to travelling.

"We're coming home as soon as he's back to normal," McNair said.

"He is still crook but much better today.

"Luckily enough we got the colic early and began treatment.

"He was given heavy duty antibiotics to treat the leg infection and it seems one of those may have caused the colic.

"That treatment was stopped and his temperature is just a little above normal.

"He will need more treatment on the leg but as soon as that comes good, we're coming home.

"I've been enjoying the sunshine and the warmer weather but it will be good to get home."

McNair is keen to give dual Group One winner Hay List a long spell to give him time to fix his troublesome feet which have caused problems in the past.

"He will be out for a minimum of eight weeks, probably ten which rules out a defence of the Manikato," McNair said.

"And if the Black Curse (Black Caviar) goes there we're up against it again as Moonee Valley would suit her.

"The Patinack Farm later in the spring is a consideration but I'd rather stay in Sydney.

"Hopefully Racing NSW wins the court case and we get extra prize money and can stay home.

"We could have a 1400-metre race with Hay List and More Joyous, that would bring people to the races."

Racing NSW has millions of dollars on hold which it will release for prize money if it wins its High Court case against corporate bookmakers over rights fees later this year.

Hay List has run Group One seconds to Black Caviar twice this autumn in the TJ Smith and BTC Cup and won the All-Aged Stakes in her absence.
