Trainer John McNair has confirmed the Expressway Stakes will the launching pad for Hay List's autumn campaign after the sprint star's sparkling gallop between races at Gosford on Thursday.

The Manikato Stakes winner was sent around alongside stablemate Mighty Obvious but the hulking sprinter left his working companion in his wake over the final 200m as he clocked 33.81 seconds for the final 600m.

"(Jockey) Glyn Schofield was very, very happy," McNair said.

"(Part-owner) Katie Davenport uses Glyn's smile as a measure and she said it was off the Richter scale today.

"Glyn was thrilled and said he felt better at this point of his preparation than any previous preparation.

"As long as he is as good as he is today going into his first-up run I would be very happy."

After the Group Two Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on February 5, Hay List will head to Melbourne to clash with Black Caviar in the Group One Lightning Stakes (1000m) two weeks later.

McNair has been on Hay List's back in all his pacework leading into Thursday's exhibition gallop and said he expected Mighty Obvious to stick closer to his illustrious stablemate in the hitout.

"I don't understand why he didn't stay with him, maybe the other horse (Hay List) just worked really well, even better than expected," he said.

"You've got to remember the other horse has been going well in metropolitan races and he can lead in pretty much any race.

"Normally he would run 33 and a half seconds. They went pretty easy from the 600 to the 400 metre mark, a bit easier than I wanted, so I don't know what Hay List has run his last 400 in but it would've been good."

McNair said Schofield concurred with his own assessment that Hay List was giving him a stronger feel this time in work.

"So that's pretty exciting," McNair said.

Hay List is the $7.50 second favourite for the Group One Newmarket Handicap behind Black Caviar ($2.30) in the market released by TAB Sportsbet earlier this week.
