Trainer Ricky Maund will watch General Truce's bid to give him his first Group One win in the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on television at another race meeting.

Maund, 38, has had limited Group One opportunities in six years training horses but is giving up the chance to be on course on Derby Day for what is potentially the highlight of his career.

Instead he will saddle up four of General Truce's stablemates at Traralgon, 165km southeast of Melbourne.

Maund said a stable foreman would look after General Truce for owners Kevin and Tanith O'Brien who will be at Flemington.

"The O'Briens will be there and if General Truce happens to win they can kiss and cuddle each other and I will catch up with them later to celebrate," Maund said.

General Truce has been one of Maund's better horses and since his Bendigo debut win as two-year-old has competed in 10 stakes races in a row.

A year ago at his second race start he won the Group Three Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) at Flemington and in his only Group One contest finished 13th to Star Witness in the Blue Diamond Stakes in February.

Star Witness is the Coolmore Stud Stakes favourite at $3.80 with TAB Sportsbet but Maund is confident that General Truce ($18) can acquit himself much better against him this time.

The pair last met two starts ago when General Truce was third and Star Witness fourth to Black Caviar in the weight-for-age Group Two Schillaci Stakes (1000m).

The Brief Truce gelding's last run was again against older horses in the Group Two Caulfield Sprint (1100m) and he finished fourth to Set For Fame.

"It won't be a walk in the park on Saturday but I am happy enough with him," Maund said.

"He will appreciate coming back to his own age group and I'm sure he will run well again."

A model of consistency, General Truce proved he was up to the Coolmore Stud Stakes when a length third to Soul and Buffering in the Group Two Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on September 4.

"It's a good race on Saturday but he (General Truce) is a real each-way chance," Maund said.

"He is a pretty good horse, doesn't get flustered on those big days, and is proven down the straight."

Dean Yendall has ridden General Truce at his last two starts and like Maund is getting a rare chance at a Group One race.

"He (Yendall) will do the job," Maund said. "He rides well for me."
