Trainer Rod Douglas says Flawless Gem will be on trial for a start in the South Australian Sires' Produce Stakes when she runs at Sandown on Wednesday.

Douglas will start both Flawless Gem, a $330,000 New Zealand Premier Yearling sale purchase, and Clearway, a $400,000 Inglis Premier Yearling sale buy, in the Bint Marscay Hcp (1400m).

"Flawless Gem is a better than average two-year-old who gives the impression she'll run a trip and if she runs well we'll take her to Adelaide for the Sires," Douglas said.

"She was ridden upside down but still managed to win at Cranbourne after a strong third at stakes level behind Exceedingly French at her first start at Moonee Valley."

The daughter of Encosta De Lago will again be ridden by Matthew Allen who was on her when she defeated Purely Spectacular and Wednesday's rival Fearless Babe over 1200m in a two-year-old maiden at Cranbourne on March 22.

The form out of that race has proven to be quite strong as Purely Spectacular ran second to Europa Point over 1200m at Moonee Valley on April 3 while Fearless Babe won over 1400m at Sandown on April 1.

At her debut Flawless Gem ran third in the St Albans Stakes (1200m) at the Valley on December 27.

Douglas said he was looking more to the spring for Redoute's Choice gelding Clearway who resumed with a third to Briefed in a 1210m Sale two-year-old maiden at his second start on March 25, and he may go out for a spell after Wednesday's run.

"He made up good ground coming from last at Sale, but of the two I have a leaning to Flawless Gem," he said.

Daniel Moor will ride Clearway and he is also aboard stablemate Royal Excess in the Wynette Hcp (2100m).

Royal Excess, a three-year-old filly by Exceed And Excel, is out of the 1995 Auckland Cup (3200m) winner Royal Tiara.

A maiden after five starts, Royal Excess showed improvement when she ran on strongly late to finish third to Marveen over 1600m at Caulfield on April 4.

"It was a good run and being stoutly bred, getting up in trip will help her tomorrow," Douglas said.

"If she was to measure up by winning a couple we might take her to Queensland for the Oaks."

Her dam, trained by Trevor McKee of Sunline fame, was runner-up to Slight Chance in the 1993 Queensland Oaks.
