Quality German stayer Protectionist is likely to miss the Caulfield Cup, but will run in Melbourne before the Melbourne Cup.

Trainer Andrea Wohler says the last start Prix Kergorlay winner has been aimed at the Melbourne Cup.

I can’t complain about the weight you know, he has won two Group 2’s now,” Wohler said. “He is very well after his Deauville run and heads into quarantine in the UK. He is not a definite runner in the Caulfield Cup yet...We may go to a different race before running in the Melbourne Cup.”

Wohler’s comments were reported by www.GermanRacingReview.com.

The Prix Kergorlay has been a significant form pointer in recent years with Americain winning the race before he came to Melbourne and won the Cup.

The following year Dunaden was placed in the Kergorlay before winning the Cup.

Protectionist has raced just seven times for three wins and four placings.
