Bookmaker innovation...Yes, the bookies are coming up with ingenious ways to keep interest flowing among punters, especially in races where a 'standout' chance looms, just like champion sprinter Black Caviar who is stifling straight-out betting on Friday night's William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley. The Betstar outfit is allowing punters to bet on the superstar mare's winning margin in the Grp 1 race as well as other novelty options. Punters can back Black Caviar against the field or try the Favorite-Out option which sees Newmarket Handicap runner-up Crystal Lily at the head of betting at $3.20 with Black Caviar's stablemate Master Harry next best at $3.60.

Betstar's Alan Eskander told PPD: 'The "novelty" options give punters a chance of getting some "value" out a race which they may not have bothered to have a bet on. I reckon there'll be plenty of punters keen to have a piece of our "Winning Margin" prices. The last time she raced at Moonee Valley (on Cox Plate Day last year), she won pulling up by 5.5 lengths and you'd think she's going just as well now. Punters can get $5 about her winning by five lengths or more tomorrow night while the favourite way at the moment is the spread of 3.0 - 3.9 lengths. Her average winning margin at Moonee Valley (in three runs) is 3.8 lengths but I wouldn't be surprised to see Luke Nolen caught up in the excitement of the night, and as long as he keeps his eye off the big screen, she could win by six lengths or more. Plus Peter Moody needs her to win to get his hands on that Mercedes so I'm sure he'll push her out.' (www.betstar.com.au).
