SOUTH Australian racing boss John Glatz yesterday pledged that his state would stand behind Victoria as it sought to keep jumps racing viable, reports The Age.

Its report adds: ''We will still be there to support Victoria as far as keeping jumping racing going,'' said Glatz, who is the chairman of the Oakbank Racing Club.

Glatz paid tribute to Victorian Racing Minister Denis Napthine, who has been a major supporter of jumps racing, when he said that Mr Napthine's backing had been critical during its struggle against voluble protesters seeking to have the sport banned.

''It's been a battle but I think we are getting there with the help of Denis Napthine,'' Glatz said. ''We owe him a lot, not just for what he's done for jumps racing but for racing in general.''
