IF the timing hadn't been so bad, and the ankle less smashed, it would almost be funny, reports the Melbourne Herald Sun.

It says: As it is, top jockey Chris Symons will be sidelined for the important first few weeks of the spring carnival after a bizarre mishap in the car park of the Sale racecourse on Wednesday.

Preparing to head home, Symons saw a car reversing rapidly towards him as he put his riding gear in the boot of his car.

"I thought it was a bit of a joke, that someone was reversing at me as a stunt, then I noticed it wasn't going to stop and I dived in the boot of the car," he said.

"But my foot was still dangling and the car slammed straight into it."

The reversing car was driven by apprentice Tom Sadler, an L-plate driver. Another jockey, Jamie Mott, was in the passenger seat.

"It took about 20 seconds for the driver to register, then he drove forward a bit," Symons said.

"In some ways I was lucky. If the boot wasn't open to dive into I'd have two broken legs."

Symons called an ambulance, then cancelled it and was driven to the Epworth Hospital by apprentice Damian Lane.
