Michelle Payne finally got to ride a horse she trains under her dual license, with her first runner as trainer Queen of Zealand finishing second in a Warrnambool maiden on Sunday.

While the Tammy Good-trained Royal Butterfly upstaged Payne's race favourite, it was a meritorious Australian debut for the Crown Oaks-bound filly in the 1700m race on a Slow 5 track at the 'Bool.

It was a long-awaited first run in Australia too, after missed runs at Stawell, Bendigo and Cranbourne earlier in October.

But there was a much longer wait for a winner for local trainer Good, whose previous most recent winner was Spartypants at Hamilton back in June 2013.

"She probably was never suited on the fibre [synthetic] track," Good said, after apprentice Jordan Childs guided Royal Butterfly to victory.

"Steven King rode her really well the first and second starts [since moving to Good's stable], educated her a little bit.

"He said after the second time, get her off the fibre and get her onto the grass.

"Unfortunately he couldn't ride her last start at Bendigo; he got caught in the floods and couldn't get off his farm.

"I've been really keen to get her up over a bit of ground, which is what she's bred for."
