Bradley Wallace's good run in Victoria continued on Wednesday when he rode his first Melbourne winner at Sportingbet Park (Sandown).

The apprentice jockey scored a win for Queensland when he combined with former Sunshine Stater, Forty Thirty, to score a popular win in the $30,000 Art Series Hotel Group Handicap (1500m).

It was Wallace's third win since joining Mornington trainer Tony Noonan on a three-month placement and his second in a race carrying metropolitan status following victory at Mornington on 11 June.

The son of Gold Coast trainer John produced a bold front-running ride to get the son of Mossman, who was the subject of a sustained betting move after being backed from $7 into $5, home to a comfortable win.

"We went to the front, controlled the speed and he kicked away nicely," the 20-year-old said. "He came back to me nicely, he hit a flat spot just before the corner there, but I gave him a slap and he was straight back up on the bridle."

Forty Thirty relished Wallace's 3kg claim, which left him to carry just 51kg, to scoot home by 2-3/4 lengths from Lord Wimble ($7) with Pull No Punches ($9) the same distance away third.

Trainer Clinton McDonald said it was a satisfying win given the Ascot Lodge Racing syndicate that race the gelding sent him down midway through last year with the aim of winning a race like the Art Series Hotel Group Handicap.

"The team up there said, 'he's a really good wet tracker, let's try and get him down to Melbourne and get a city win' and it's terrific that we've been able to get the job done," he said.

Forty Thirty's win was the middle leg of a good run for punters, who earlier saw $2 favourite Jugahlation coast home by 3-1/4 lengths in the Mimco Handicap (1200m) before seeing Get Out Of Town get the job done in the Sportingbet Handicap (2100m).

The Byron Cozamanis-trained four-year-old justified a strong move from $5 into $3.50 when ridden to a strong 1-1/4-length win over $3 favourite Urban Explorer by Craig Newitt.

It was a significant victory for Newitt, who moved back alongside Luke Nolen at the head of the Metropolitan Jockeys' Premiership with his 61st winner of the season.

Newitt will get the chance edge clear of Nolen, who is England to ride Black Caviar at Royal Ascot, this Saturday when he rides at Flemington.

Newitt has rides in six of the eight races, including leading fancies Isabella Snowflake (Race 1), Geejayhaitch (Race 3), Population (Race 6) and Dash For Viz (Race 7). (www.racingvictoria.net.au)
