LEGENDARY trainer Bart Cummings has spent the past week in hospital suffering from a cold, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

It says: Cummings's son Anthony said the 12-time Melbourne Cup-winning trainer was taken to hospital last week as a precaution but was expected to be released last night.

''He had a cold and, given his history, they didn't want to take any risks, so he went to hospital,'' Anthony Cummings said. ''I went up and saw him the other day and he was cracking jokes and he is fine. I'm not sure whether he is out or not because they were going to release [him] today.''

It is believed Cummings's illness was related to his lifelong asthma condition. Cummings has had several hospital stays in the past couple of years. The 83-year-old was admitted to hospital with pneumonia in April last year before breaking his pelvis in a fall in August. Cummings was again forced into hospital for a couple of days during Melbourne Cup week but was able to get out to watch So You Think run third in the race.
