The autumn campaign of Golden Slipper hopeful Winter King is over, with the colt sent to the paddock with shin-soreness.
The promising One Cool Cat youngster, who was at $34 on Betchoice fixed odds for the $3.5 million Golden Slipper, was nominated for an 1100-metre race at Rosehill on Saturday.
Trainer David Payne said Winter King, who was also a $35 hope on TAB Sportsbet for the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield next month, had gone to the paddock this week.
"He's not going around on Saturday, he's shin-sore and will stay in the paddock for six weeks, so that's the end of his campaign," Payne said.
"That's it for him this time in which is disappointing but it happens with these young horses and he'll be back."
Winter King ran second on debut to Betchoice's $9 Golden Slipper favourite Real Saga in the Listed Breeders Plate (1000m) at Randwick on October 4.
Payne's colt had no luck in the run, being posted three-wide throughout after failing to cross from his wide gate before the saddle slipped under jockey Jeff Lloyd in the straight.
Two weeks later, Winter King finished third to Horizons in the Tattersalls Plate before having a 13-week spell.
He looked primed for a successful return after a comfortable victory in an 817-metre barrier trial at Warwick Farm on January 2.
Payne also said unraced juvenile Smart Lady would not run in the fillies 1100-metre race at Rosehill.
"She's not quite ready yet, we want to give her one more trial before she races," he said.
The Catbird filly failed to beat a runner home in her only barrier trial over 900 metres at Rosehill last Friday.
Madibagold and Festus Hagen will be Payne's only runners at the Rosehill meeting.
"I'll only have those two going around, they are both well and should run nice races," Payne said.
The Golden Slipper (1200m) is at Rosehill on April 4.
