Trainer David Payne believes Smart Lady has been crying out for at 1600 metres and she gets the chance to stretch out in Monday's Fernhill Handicap.

The Catbird filly comes into the race after running 1-3/4 lengths fifth to Onemorenomore in the Listed TJ Baillieu Handicap (1400m) on a heavy track at Randwick on April 1.

"She's done very well since the run and I'm expecting this distance to bring out the best in her, she'll be in the finish," Payne said.

"Her run was terrific the other day and you could see that she only got going late, she really hit the line well.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing her go around."

The filly is out of an unraced New Zealand mare Lady Elaine who is by 1982 Victoria Derby winner Grosvenor, the sire of 1997 AJC Australian Derby winner Ebony Grosve.

Smart Lady is yet to win from four starts with her best effort a close third to Military Gal over 1200 metres at Warwick Farm in February.

"We gave her a freshen-up and her two runs back since have been very good, she's coming along nicely," Payne said.

Payne trained the 2006 winner of the Fernhill, Gallant Tess who went on to run third in the Champagne Stakes at two.

Gallant Tess has gone on to compete at the highest level with victory in the Group Two Chelmsford Stakes last spring and a string of minor placings in Group One company.

Smart Lady has drawn barrier one and will be ridden by Glyn Schofield.

TAB Sportsbet has Smart Lady at $18 while Euphemism and Shadow Miss are locked in favouritism at $3.80.

The Garry White-trained Shadow Miss won a 1200 metre race at Rosehill in January and comes into the Fernhill after finishing strongly when fifth to Indian Ocean in the Group Two Magic Night Stakes (1200m) on March 28.

Lonhro colt Euphemism is yet to score from his two starts and ran a close third to Onemorenomore in the Baillieu.
