Trainer Mark Kavanagh got the proverbial monkey off his back when talented three-year-old Whobegotyou gave him his first metropolitan win in over two months in Friday night's Group Two Bill Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Kavanagh's horses have been running well without winning and the last city winner he had prepared was on July 23 at a VRC meeting at Bendigo.

"I'm back in the winner's list. It's nice to break through with a Group win," said a delighted Kavanagh.

"He was stuck on the fence at the 800m and I said `come on Michael' (jockey Michael Rodd) and when he got out it was all over in about four strides.

"He could be one out of the box.

"He's had a run at the mile now and he'll go two weeks to the Caulfield Guineas."

The $1 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) is run on October 11.

The Flemington trainer said Whobegotyou would then to go the AAMI Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 25 before the $1.5 million Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on November 1.

The Street Cry gelding, sent out a $3.40 favourite, once in the clear went on for a 3-3/4 length victory over All American ($5) with Carnero ($5.50) a length away third.

Rodd was clearly impressed.

"It was a freakish win. He was in a hopeless position at the half-mile (800m) and there was nothing I could do about it," he said.

"I just had to wait to get out. I'd already had two unlucky rides on him and I didn't want to make it a third one.

"He's pretty awesome."

Rodd said Whobegotyou was such a relaxed horse he believes he will run the Derby trip.
