Trainer Greg Eurell says talented four-year-old Mic Mac has freshened up as well as he could have hoped, but he can't split him and stablemate Apache Cat going in to the Group Two Schweppes Stakes at Moonee Valley.

"Luck in running is going to play a big part," Eurell said of Saturday's 1200m event.

"Both horses are in good order and they are hard to split.

"They worked one on one this morning and finished together and even on Saturday they have drawn alongside one another."

Eurell had hoped that Mic Mac would be running in Saturday's Cox Plate (2040m) but he decided to target the feature sprint of the day with him after he was beaten a length by Cox Plate favourite Whobegotyou in the Group Two Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at the Valley six weeks ago.

As an afterthought Mic Mac backed up in the Group One Manikato Stakes and despite dropping back to 1200 metres was beaten just over a length, finishing fifth to Danleigh.

Apache Cat was first-up and rattled home from second last to finish alongside Mic Mac in sixth place.

Eurell said that with a month between runs Mic Mac had freshened much better for Saturday.

"He leads in to this better than he did the Manikato," Eurell said.

He added that Apache Cat had also trained on well since his last-start second to Lucky Secret who broke Caulfield's 1000-metre course record in the Group Two Schillaci Stakes on October 10.

"To do what he did last start when not that suited at the distance was a huge effort," Eurell said.

He said he expected Apache Cat, ridden by Damien Oliver, would be more forward on Saturday and that Dan Nikolic would have Mic Mac just in front of him.

"There will be a bit of speed on up front so I can see Mic Mac settling third and Apache Cat fourth or fifth," he said.

Lucky Secret is TAB Sportsbet's $3.20 favourite for the Schweppes on the strength of his commanding 2-1/4-length win in the Schillaci while Apache Cat is at $3.70.

Mic Mac and Ortensia share the third line of betting at $7.50.
