The Newmarket Handicap at Flemington might be his main focus but the Tattersall's Members' Cup at Eagle Farm is proving a worthy sideshow for astute trainer Barry Baldwin.

Baldwin is confident he can land his first interstate Group One victory with Burdekin Blues in the Newmarket and he's equally adamant Rightson will take a power of beating in the $75,000 Listed 1600m feature at Eagle Farm.

Gun heavyweight hoop Shane Scriven has made the effort to get down to 54.5kg to partner Rightson and he will afford the horse the run of the race off barrier seven.

"He should be very hard to beat. If he can get one off the fence in the first half of the field that will be ideal," Baldwin said.

"Shane is a good judge and he must think he's a good chance to get down to that weight to ride him.

"He's a great rider and he'll know exactly where to have him during the run. He's a horse who appreciates being saved up and produced in the straight and he's got the right bloke for exactly that."

Rightson was narrowly beaten by Striking Victory over 1350m at his last run at Doomben on February 21 and Baldwin believes the step up in distance will be perfect for the Strategic gelding.

Two runs back Rightson defeated Fulmonti and Pentacity over 1615m at Doomben and prior to that he finished eighth, beaten just three lengths, to Black Piranha at Caloundra on January 18.

"He has surprised me this campaign. When I first got him I was told he was a sprinter only and as he's got a bit older he's looking for a bit of distance," Baldwin said.

"Even though he's only won the one race for me he's been going really well and I'm very happy with the way he's coming along."

Rightson will receive 6.5 kilos from topweight Ice Chariot who has compressed the weights significantly.

Toowoomba galloper Sam's Express will carry the same weight as Rightson and the remaining 10 runners have been handicapped on the minimum of 53kg.
