Well, just how good is Mic Mac? He's certainly got a real touch of the Hussler about him. It's correct to describe his Aurie's Star win as explosive. But, hey, what about the old marvel who ran 3rd? I'm talking about El Segundo. He was my eachway tip for the race and he ran right up to what I expected. That was a slashing final 100m. A clash between Mic Mac and El Segundo will certainly breathe life into the Cox Plate. Trainer Greg Eurell reckons he's keeping an open mind on the future. He says: 'The three weeks into the Memsie Stakes is spot on for him now...I'm very confident that he'll run a mile and based on what he does in the Dato Tan Chin Nam at Moonee Valley after that, I'll decide what's to come...He's been nominated for the Cox Plate and you hope to get to those heights, but 2000m is still an unknown.''
While Mic Mac will step into unknown territory beyond the mile, we know that it's tailormade for El Segundo. He had a whopping 63.5kgs on Saturday but shrugged it off to produce a blistering finale. Jockey Luke Nolen was impressed. He says: 'He ran super, just super...He's a race-to-race proposition but if he runs as good next time I'll be even more excited.' Colin Little says: 'He can do exceptional things...The winner put five lengths on him at one stage and we got beat a length-and-a-half so he's gone pretty good...We've got a bit to look forward to if we can keep him sound.''
Not even spring yet and already the stars are falling...Theseo is the latest to be under a cloud. The three-time Grp 1 winner is battling hoof problems. Trainer Gai Waterhouse says Theseo is doing all his work in the swimming pool. She hopes the classy 6YO can beat the setback. A final decision is expected within a few weeks.
