Jockey Tim Clark breaks new ground at Happy Valley tonight when he rides Simple in the Hip Wo Handicap (1,000m) and the grey should have everything set up to make the Australian's first ride for Dennis Yip Chor-hong a winning one.
Zac Purton and Yip have become the new Dream Team, with a stunning strike rate recently, but Purton has switched to Good Boy Boy for Paul O'Sullivan and left the way open for compatriot Clark on the likely favourite.
Simple's only appearance over the 1,000m at the Valley saw him just touched off in October by Frederick Engels, who has now ascended to Group One level.
And Simple has done nothing to suggest his form has dropped away since, with his most recent outing bringing a narrow second to Imperial Rome over 1,200m at the city track.
There's no doubt he had his chance that night, but Imperial Rome (Brett Prebble) has matured into one of the top performers at the track and there was no disgrace to be upstaged by him and they look the dominant pair in this contest. Yip has added blinkers to Simple for the drop back in distance, but more important is the way the race looks to set up. There is serious speed engaged with Romantic City, Good Boy Boy, Horse Galore, Amedeo and Final Answer, and the pace looks hot even if one or two don't take part in the race for the front.
