As far as timely fillips go, few come better than Vonusti's performance in Saturday's Gr.1 The Oaks Stud Telegraph Hcp (1200m) at Trentham. Streaking home for top hoop Noel Harris to defy a star studded field by 2 lengths, the 5YO Ustinov gelding provided the utmost of black-type updates for Lot 644 - a full brother who is to be offered by Brighthill Farm at the Select Sale on February 3.

Like Vonusti - who was the very first foal to hit the ground for the regally bred sire Ustinov, the colt is bred by Brighthill Farm's secretary Liz Fairweather along with her husband Jeff.

Indulging in the morning tea shout brought in by Liz at the time, Brighthill Farm's Nick King had this to say about the colt: "He's a really correct, sound horse, who is very good looking and a great walker. He should attract interest at Karaka...There are definite similarities with Vonusti. They both have good temperaments but this guy has a bit more range and scope about him."

Having previously stood the Vonusti's sire Ustinov, King was full of praise for the patience exhibited by Vonusti's trainer's Tim and Margaret Carter.

"Ustinov tended to throw a wonderful type that had great natures. He was a quality horse himself and he gave the inclination that given time, his progeny would do well. After showing some ability early, Vonusti's trainers have just been so patient. They've really bided their time and have come away with a fantastic result,"

All told, Vonusti has raced on 18 occasions and has returned $733,088 for owners Phillip & Thomas O'Shea and Ramesh Patel as a result of 8 wins and 5 placings.

Usurping Ustinov's Gr.1 performed daughter Antarctic Miss, Vonusti could potentially extend his number one offspring status with a pending start in the Gr.1 Waikato Draught Sprint (WFA, 1400m) at Te Rapa on February 13.
