FLEMINGTON bills its Turnbull Stakes meeting on the first weekend of October as Melbourne Cup carnival preview day, reports the Sunday Age.

It says: And Moonee Valley promotes its Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes meeting as Cox Plate preview day; certainly the quality of the fare on offer yesterday had a real Cox Plate feel about it at a meeting that gives trainers and owners an ideal opportunity to discover whether their horses are suitable to the peculiarities of the inner-city circuit.

Both feature race winners - the Jim Conlan-trained Rekindled Interest in the major event and the Peter Moody-prepared King's Rose in the Stocks Stakes for mares - are likely to be back in six weeks for the Australasian weight-for-age championship. But it won't be just those two who are likely to have a tilt at the Plate this season in a race regarded as one of the more wide open in recent times with the defection of So You Think, the hero of the past two Plates, to the Irish stables of Aidan O'Brien.

Pinker Pinker, Greg Eurell's mare who covered plenty of ground before going down narrowly to King's Rose, could also line up in the 2040-metre classic depending on how she progresses, while Whobegotyou, a heavily backed favourite in the Dato, enjoyed little luck in running and will be back again for a third tilt at the great race in which he ran third last year behind So You Think.
