RACING Victoria stewards grilled Danny Nikolic for more than an hour last night as the exhaustive probe took another tack, reports the Melbourne Herald Sun.

Stewards focused on the identity of about 25 people listed in Nikolic's mobile phone.

Chief stipe Terry Bailey, one of three stewards who convened the inquiry in a room in the Sandown grandstand, peppered Nikolic about his relationship with a raft of people from racehorse owners to form analysts to a fruiterer.

The 35-year-old said the bulk of the people were his friends to whom he spoke to on a host of topics.

It's believed the 25 contacts were people who spoke to Nikolic on the day that coincided with one of the 10 rides about which stewards have raised concerns. Nikolic asked the stewards where the investigation, now more than 10 weeks old, was heading. Bailey told Nikolic he would "be informed in due time".

Nikolic also queried why stewards had on Tuesday asked the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board to impose a six-month suspension on him for initially not handing over his mobile phone. Stewards adjourned the investigation to a date to be set.
