WHOBEGOTYOU will not race in Melbourne until next season after he was given an extended rest following his unplaced Cox Plate run, reports The Age.
It says: The gelding was not among the 46 entries for the $1 million group 1 Australian Cup on March 6 when nominations closed yesterday but his trainer Mark Kavanagh said that there was nothing amiss with the multiple group 1 winner.
''He just needed longer off and so we gave it to him,'' Kavanagh said. ''He was a bit jaded after a tough spring campaign and there was no point rushing him back (into work) and so we'll look to kick him off in Sydney.''
Whobegotyou was sent to the paddock immediately after he ran a disappointing sixth as the $2.80 favourite in last October's Cox Plate at Moonee Valley. He endured a relatively tough spring campaign. He finished no further back than second in his five lead-up runs to the Cox Plate but could not produce his best in the race that mattered most.
Kavanagh said he had no concrete plans for the horse in Sydney. Whobegotyou is also likely to be among the entries for the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane in June in case he takes longer than expected to reach his peak after such a long break in the paddock.
