WHOBEGOTYOU'S trainer Mark Kavanagh left Moonee Valley last night certain of two things: his super five-year-old is firmly on track to make amends for last year's defeat as favourite in the Cox Plate, and another star was confirmed - the giant sprinter Hay List, reports the Sunday Age.
Just 40 minutes before Whobegotyou won his second Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes with a typically powerful finishing sprint to beat Australia's champion racehorse Typhoon Tracy, former West Australian sprinter Hay List thrashed Kavanagh's capable sprinter Catapulted in a performance that took the trainer's breath away.
''He was awesome. He was arrogant. That was scary,'' he said. ''I don't know where to place my [sprint] horses, but hopefully in races that he's not in.''
Standing at about 17 hands and weighing a mighty 600 kilograms, Hay List won his 10th race from just 12 starts and looks almost certain to gain his first group 1 victory when he returns to Moonee Valley for the Manikato Stakes on AFL grand final eve.
Last year, Whobegotyou was beaten for the only time in six runs at Moonee Valley in the Cox Plate and Kavanagh agreed that he had some unfinished business with the race.
''His whole campaign has been shaped to have him right for this day in six weeks' time,'' he said.
Whobegotyou firmed from $10 to $6 second favourite for the $3 million race behind So You Think ($4). Shoot Out, who finished third yesterday after being caught on the inferior ground near the rail, eased from $6.50 to $8.
Kavanagh said he may wait another four weeks for the group 1 Yalumba Stakes at Caulfield before unleashing Whobegotyou again. ''That gives me two weeks until the Cox Plate. But I'll wait and see how he is in the morning and work out if we need to get another run into him.''
