JOCKEY Simone Montgomerie has died after being thrown from her horse at the Darwin Cup meeting at Fannie Bay. The mother-of-two was riding Riahgrand in Race 6 when the horse horse threw her to the ground 100m from the finish line.

Paramedics treated her before placing her on a stretcher, the NT News reports. The Darwin Turf Club has confirmed Ms Montgomerie's death. Earlier, the club cancelled the iconic race meeting.

"As far as we are concerned, Simone was our family and we are all devastated by this accident," said club chairman Brett Dixon.

Ms Montgomerie's father Peter Montgomerie trained 2005 Melbourne Cup runner-up On A Jeune.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy, who won the 2000 Melbourne Cup aboard Brew and rode runner-up On A Jeune, expressed his condolences.

"I'm shattered by the news," McEvoy told news.com.au. "I know Simone really well, we actually did pony club together. My condolences go to the Montgomerie family."
