Darren Weir’s Signoff has been the medium of a sizeable betting plunge to win next Tuesday’s $6.2 million Melbourne Cup, reports Racing Network.

The promising young stayer has been $34 into $17 to win the Cup but must win Saturday’s Group 2 $300,000 Lexus Stakes (2500m) to make the Cup field.

With sportingbet.com he has been crunched in both the Lexus Stakes market and the Melbourne Cup market.

The TAB fixed-odds on both markets have also been hit, withSignoff being $3.40 into $2.60 to win Saturday’s Lexus Stakes, and he has been $41 into $21 for the Melbourne Cup.

A win in the Lexus and with just 50kgs (plus a penalty) he would go into the Melbourne Cup one of, if not, the favourite for the great race.

Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown has this morning said the big money has arrived for Signoff.

“We’ve taken one bet of $10,000 and plenty of other big stuff for Signoff and he’s now $2.80 from $2.90 for the Lexus,”  Brown said.

“His Melbourne Cup odds have also been crunched in the last ten days courtesy of a huge spike in interest and bet numbers.”

Signoff’s odds of winning the Cup have halved from $34 into $17 at Sportingbet in the past 10 days.

That makes him equal sixth favourite with Red Cadeaux and behind Admire Rakti ($5), Protectionist ($6), Lucia Valentina ($6.50), Fawkner ($10) and Mutual Regard ($10).
