Trainer Kelso Wood is hoping it will be third time lucky as he sets his sights on next year's Magic Millions Trophy at the Gold Coast with Zero Rock following the filly's near record-breaking win at Doomben today.

Wood was forced to scrap plans to send Zero Rock to Sydney for the $1 million Group Two Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill in August after she contracted a virus before aborting a trip to Melbourne this month for the Group One Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.

Wood's decision to cancel the Melbourne trip followed the three-year-old's first defeat of her career when she narrowly went down to Toowoomba sprinter Express Air at her first attempt over 1300 metres at Eagle Farm last month.

However, the daughter of Danzero proved the defeat was only a glitch when she strolled to a 1-1/2 length win in the Interface Landscapes Handicap (1200m).

Her time of 1:08.54 was only 0.06 seconds outside the class record held by former Gold Coast flyer All Bar One and 0.66s outside Takeover Target's track record.

Wood had no regrets about not sending Zero Rock to Melbourne for the Thousand Guineas after the filly was found to be sore following her defeat by Express Air.

"She jarred up on the track after her last start and was shin-sore," Wood said.

"I galloped her on the Tuesday following her last race and she was sore in the off-front so I've had to keep icing her every day since.

"She'll go for a spell now and then come back for the Magic Millions (Trophy) and then the Brisbane winter carnival."

The Magic Millions Trophy over 1400 metres is restricted to three-year-olds at the Gold Coast in January.

Zero Rock was bred by well-known property developer David Devine who raced her mother, Broc 'n' Roll, a five-time winner from eight starts before her career was cut short prematurely by leg problems.

Ironically, Broc 'n' Roll was given her chance to compete in Melbourne by Wood eight years ago.

"She ran third but should have finished second to Miss Kournikova (in the QE II Classic) then she had a problem when I left her with another trainer when she failed in the Moet and Chandon," Wood said.
