Trainer Colin Little admitted he gave up on Zipping's half-brother Work The Room thinking he was too far back, but the exciting three-year-old still managed to fly home and win at Sandown.

By sprinter Bel Esprit, Work The Room, ridden by Danny Brereton, settled last and was still there at the top of the long Hillside straight in the Flying Spur Hcp (1300m), spotting the leaders a huge start.

But the $2.60 favourite ran outstanding final sectionals to get up and score by a half-head from Tumbulgum ($3.90) with race leader Stanton ($13) a neck away third.

The gelding was timed to run his last 800m in 44.14 seconds, the last 600m in 33.23s, the last 400m in 21.68s and his final 200m in 11.21s.

A $160,000 purchase at the Sydney Easter Yearling Sale, Work The Room is a slow-maturing type, according to Little.

"I've always wanted him to stay," Little said.

"As a two-year-old his joints blew up without any work at all. I was worried about him as we didn't even start to go evens and he became unsound so we turned him out for some time."

After several preparations in which he just trialled, Work The Room won a Ballarat 1100m maiden, coming from last early, on May 1 before making it two straight on Wednesday.

His dam Social Scene, by Grand Lodge, is a half-sister to three stakeswinning stayers including European champion Scorpion.

She is noted for producing Zipping, by Danehill, who has won 12 races including two Sandown Classics. He also finished second in last year's Cox Plate and has twice finished fourth in the Melbourne Cup.

"I think it's premature to say he's a spring horse because he's still green and learning about it and we don't want to overtax him too early," Little said of Work The Room.

"He's a bit of a big kid at the moment. He bucked when we put the saddle on him because he's not used to a small saddle.

"He's just learning all about it but he's had a good experience today anyway."

Brereton, who said he was always confident Work The Room would reel the opposition in, has a big opinion of him but says he needs more time.

"He's got ability but he's nowhere mentally right yet. He's six months away," Brereton said.

"He was a bit hot when we first got hold of him but we eventually got him to settle down."
