The excitement of seeing some of this season's best bred youngsters perform for the first time turned to outrage over the deterioration of Randwick's Kensington track with each heat of Monday's barrier trials.

Horses competing at the first official two-year-old trials get preference for entry into the opening juvenile races of the season at Randwick on October 2.

Leading trainer Gai Waterhouse didn't hold back, labelling the conditions as "atrocious" and said the Australian Jockey Club (AJC) should be ashamed.

"It's atrocious, the most disgusting in 150 years," Waterhouse said.

"The two-year-olds come here to be educated and they've learnt nothing.

"They have all had to come down the outside.

"Turnpoint shouldn't have the contract. The AJC should be ashamed and they (Turnpoint) should be sacked."

The Turnpoint company maintains the Randwick tracks in conjunction with the AJC which has been without a track manager for the past two months but is expecting to announce an appointment this week.

In an interview with TVN on Sunday, AJC chief executive Darren Pearce said problems within the working relationship between the two companies had been identified and addressed.

Steward Greg Rudolph, who was supervising the trials, said the track had been disappointing.

"It cut up and deteriorated badly," he said.

"We walked it early and it deteriorated noticeably after half a dozen trials.

"It's not ideal teaching two-year-olds to look at the outside fence instead of the rail."

Rosehill trainer David Payne was not impressed with the track but he was impressed with how some of his charges handled it with three trial wins going to the stable.

His winners were Gimcrack hopes Defiant Dame and Florentina while Trump will be aimed at the Breeders' Plate.

Anthony Cummings will also aim his trial winner Smart Missile at the Breeders Plate.

Smart Missile is one of 12 young horses that have come to Cummings this season from Eduardo Cojuangco's Gooree Stud.

"He is a very nice horse and the expectation is that he runs in the Breeders Plate," Cummings said.

"He has still got a lot to learn but I think he's pretty good."

Waterhouse's sole trial winner, Wild And Proud, is also a product of Gooree and also likely to head to the Breeders' Plate.
