He might not be the punters' favourite for the Grafton Cup but Twin Wing is top of the popularity poll at the Guy Walter stable.

The Warwick Farm trainer is confident the freegoing stayer will perform well in Thursday's feature and is hoping it translates into an overdue win.

Bellagio Wynn and Hume fought out the finish of the recent Tatt's Cup in Brisbane and dominate betting on the Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) with Twin Wing, who has not won a race since taking out the Lord Mayor's Cup in May last year, an $8.50 chance.

"He is a lovely, honest old fellow," Walter said.

"He always runs well, he never runs a bad race. He is very fit and handles all tracks and I know he will perform as well as he always does."

Twin Wing has run third at his past three starts including the Stayers' Cup and Winter Cup, both over 2400 metres.

On both occasions he did all the work in front and was a sitting shot for the swoopers but fought to the line to fill the minor placing.

He will be ridden by Walter's old friend Robert Thompson who is also overdue for a Grafton Cup win with his sole success in 1981 aboard My Star Sapphire trained by his father.

Thompson was also due to ride the Walter-trained Fighting Fund in Wednesday's Ramornie Handicap but the gelding was ruled out with a virus.

"He is fine now but the virus ruled him out of the Ramornie," Walter said.

"I'm not sure where we will go with him now. He is getting harder to place as he gets older and it's a shame he couldn't run."

Thompson picked up the Ramornie ride on the Sue Grills-trained Ollie Vollie who was formerly trained by Walter and finished sixth to Battlefield.

Sydney trainer Chris Waller will have two runners in the Grafton Cup with Come On Cugat joining Bellagio Wynn.

Waller believes Bellagio Wynn has the edge over his stablemate but says Come On Cugat can be expected to perform better on a firmer track than he has encountered in his recent runs.

"I favour Bellagio Wynn of the two but I definitely think Come On Cugat will be better on top of the ground," Waller said.

"Jeff Penza will stick with him and hopefully he can improve.

"But I think Bellagio Wynn is very well weighted and with conditions to suit he will be very hard to beat."

Come On Cugat failed by just a short half-head to reel in Nuclear Sky in the Stayers' Cup then found the heavy track too taxing in the Winter Cup won by Niwot from Two Towers, who is also in the Grafton Cup.
