Promising three-year-old Thorn Lake, an impressive winner at Sandown on Sunday, has star quality but a lot to learn says trainer Robbie Griffiths.

Tardy at the start and drifting back to second last of the 14 runners in the ESP Plate (1000m), the $3 favourite unleashed a withering sprint to score by 1-1/4 lengths from Circus Polka.

Master Of Design, a $2.1 million Easter Yearling Sale purchase racing in Sheikh Mohammed's colours, made an encouraging debut finishing the same margin away third.

Jockey Brad Rawiller agreed with Griffiths in his opinion of Thorn Lake.

"He's first class no doubt. You can't do what he did today unless you are pretty good, just full credit to the horse," Rawiller said .

"It's definitely a concern when you are giving them such a start and I didn't want to be going across to the inside.

"I thought the best chances were out wide with us and I didn't want to have to look for luck.

"On the corner I thought he had the job ahead, but he was just too good.

"It takes him a bit to get into stride but once he does he's awesome and he's only going keep getting better with racing."

Griffiths has been reluctant to step the son of 2004 Stradbroke Handicap winner Thorn Park up beyond 1000 metres at this stage, a trip he has raced at four times for two wins and two seconds.

"He's not the complete package yet but he has star quality," said the Cranbourne trainer.

"There's a 1200 metre race coming up for him here but I just want to see how he gets through his next run before making any plans.

"He certainly has a great motor but he sets himself a big task."

Thorn Lake, who is out of the Star Way mare Nimue, was purchased by Griffiths for $80,000 at the Classic Yearling Sale in Sydney.

"He was the last lot of the sale," Griffiths said.

Meanwhile Caulfield trainer Luke Oliver completed his second metropolitan double, both at Sandown, when seven-year-old Scenic Scene ($7) won the Hilton Manufacturing Cup (1700m).

Earlier five-year-old stablemate Determination ($4.60 fav), handled by Craig Williams, took out the Des Gleeson Hcp (2400m).

The 31-year-old Olive has a reputation for rejuvenating tried horses and both of Sunday's winners came to him from other stables.

Oliver is enjoying his best season with 26 winners, six of them in town, the highlights being the Listed Bagot Hcp (2500m) at Flemington with God Red and the Ararat China Bowl and a Flemington succes with Ulysses.

Oliver said Determination had a good future as a stayer.

"He's out of a Kaapstad mare and he seems to stay all day," he said.

"He's nominated for the Warrnambool Cup but I don't think I'll take him. It's a pretty tough race and I might look for something a bit easier."
