Patinack Farm trainer John Thompson's attention will be on Doncaster day at Randwick but he'll still take a keen interest in the result of the Listed Queensland Day Plate at Doomben.

Thompson's brother Mark will saddle up Hour Of Peril and Thegreatandthegood in the 1350-metre feature.

Thompson will closely monitor the performance of Hour Of Peril who is on the path to the Group One Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm in June.

The son of Fusaichi Pegasus won three straight in Brisbane last campaign before Thompson headed west for the Group Two Western Australian Guineas (1600m) at Ascot in November.

However, Hour Of Peril failed to reproduce his dazzling Queensland form finishing 10th to Playing God in the Perth feature.

Thompson then sought a consolation with Hour Of Peril who finished fifth to Playing God in the Listed Aquanita Stakes (1800m) at Ascot two weeks later.

"He probably needed the run in the Guineas but he ran a good race in the Aquanita," John Thompson said.

"He got back and was caught behind a wall of horses in the Aquanita and by the time Damien (Oliver) got out the race was all over."

Thompson gave Hour Of Peril a barrier trial at Eagle Farm on Tuesday but believes the three-year-old is still short of peak condition for his comeback.

"He only ran sixth and it was soft trial for him," Thompson said.

"Jim Byrne rode him and he was over the moon with his effort."

Thompson is yet to finalise Hour Of Peril's program towards the Group One Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 11.

"I'm not sure of his next run but he's headed to the Queensland Derby," he said.

"He gives the impression he'll run 2400 metres."

Hour Of Peril has drawn perfectly in barrier one while stablemate Thegreatandthegood has drawn near the outside in gate 18.

Thompson was unconcerned with a forecast of rain ahead of the meeting as Hour Of Peril has won on a heavy track.

"Hour Of Peril doesn't mind it wet so it won't bother him and I'm leaning to starting Thegreatandthegood despite his draw," he said.

Thegreatandthegood has won on a dead track but has flopped twice on a heavy track including his last-start fourth when beaten 10 lengths by Miss Sanctity in a 1400-metre Class One at Caloundra on April 3.
