Underrated mare Tampiko provided the perfect preview for her glamour stablemate Black Caviar with a last stride win in the Prime Minister's Cup at the Gold Coast.

Tampiko is a member of the five-horse support cast Melbourne trainer Peter Moody sent north with Black Caviar and her win in the 1300m Listed event was an appropriate appetiser for next week's main act.

Confidently ridden by Chris Munce, Tampiko ($21) overcame a wide passage throughout to nail local gallopers Eire Of Magic ($51) and Fifteen Carat ($51) in the shadows of the post for a tough win.

In a blanket finish, race favourite Thank God You'rehere ($4) finished three-quarters of a length back fourth.

The nose winning margin deceived almost everyone on track bar Munce who said he was sure he'd won the race.

"I knew I had beaten Fifteen Carat and I was quietly confident I had won the race when we crossed the line," Munce said.

"She was forced to race wide throughout but she travelled well and you can ride Peter's horses like that because he always has them so fit.

"That gives you confidence to do things on his horses that you mightn't do on other horses."

Moody flew back to Melbourne after watching Black Caviar burn the Doomben turf on race morning and stable spokesman Patrick Bell said Tampiko's win was well deserved.

"She's a quality mare and she has done really well since she's been here," he said.

"She's been thereabouts at her past two runs and personally I thought dropping back to 1300 metres would suit her perfectly.

"The fast speed really suited her and she found the line strongly."

News Alert enjoyed the run of the race behind a break-neck speed set by Listen Son, Faster Son and Lucky Leak but his rider Hugh Bowman said the horse struggled in the soft conditions.

"He had every chance. It's quite gluggy out there and I don't it was to his liking," Bowman said.
