Trainer Leon Macdonald believes Augusta Proud has as good a chance as any other horse in the Goodwood field of beating Takeover Target, but indications are it is a pretty slim one.

Bookmakers are on high alert after Takeover Target was sent out at $5.50 in the TJ Smith Stakes with one bagman at Randwick offering $7 before the race.

Takeover Target was so dominant in his seventh Group One win he went up at around $2 for the Goodwood and has been backed in to between $1.60 and $1.65 with various betting agencies.

But local trainer Macdonald isn't shying away from the international star who gets into Saturday's Group One sprint at weight-for-age with just 58.5kg under the changed conditions from handicap to set weights and penalties.

"She has as much hope as any other horse in the race against Takeover Target," Macdonald said.

"He gets into the race with a great weight but I'm sure she will run well.

"If she runs second I'll be happy."

The winner of the 2008 Magic Millions, Augusta Proud was at $16 on Thursday with I Am Invincible the $10 second elect for the Goodwood with TAB Sportsbet.

Augusta Proud chased frontrunner I Am Invincible home when she ran second to him in the Group Three Evright.com (1100m) on her home track on April 18.

The presence of Takeover Target has given the Adelaide race day unprecedented attention and he has been the star attraction at Morphettville all week.

While the Goodwood seems to be out of Macdonald's grasp, he believes he almost has his hands on the SA Derby trophy with a revitalised Rebel Raider.

The Victoria Derby winner was out of sorts in a three-race Sydney campaign aimed at the AJC Australian Derby but showed a return to form with victory on his home track last Saturday week.

He is the $3.40 favourite for the Derby ahead of Victorian Larry's Never Late who is at $4 following his lead-up win against older horses in the Hamilton Cup.

At the corresponding meeting a year ago, Rebel Raider won the Group Three Sires' Produce Stakes and Macdonald has outsider Bint Maher in it this year.

The filly has been unplaced in two starts but Macdonald believes she can take benefit from those runs.

While he is hopeful of a good showing from Bint Maher, he is confident her year older stablemate Impressive Eagle can cap a big day for the stable in the Auraria Stakes (1800m).

Her main opposition is expected to come from Sydney filly Palacio De Cristal but Macdonald cites the form around Impressive Eagle as strong.

After running third in the Group One Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m), Impressive Eagle won the Listed Laelia Stakes (1600m) and finished fourth in the Group Two Queen Of The South (1600m) won by Bird of Fire from Amberino.

"Her form is pretty good," Macdonald said.

"She didn't run badly the other day and with a bit of luck would have finished second instead of fourth.

"The runner-up went on to win the Emancipation in Sydney so the formline is pretty good."
