Promising filly Sussuro will be out to improve her chances of gaining a start in the Group One Thousand Guineas by winning at Caulfield on Sunday.

Sussuro was having only her second race start, after finishing second to Someday Somehow over 1000m at Moonee Valley in June, when she powered home from last to score impressively over 1200m at the Valley on September 11.

Sussuro will face 10 rivals in the Schweppes Hcp (1440m) and will be ridden by trainer Tony Noonan's son, in-form stable apprentice Jake Noonan.

"She's a lightly-framed filly, she didn't have a long break over the winter and she still has the winter coat but she really hits the line," Noonan said.

"I think you'll see a real good filly in the autumn."

Noonan said he was also looking at running the filly, who is by Northern Dancer-line stallion Pivotal, in the Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on October 2 to lift her rating.

Sussuro is at $21 for the Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 13, a race in which TAB Sportsbet has Guineas Prelude winner Divorces favourite at $5.

Meanwhile, Lee Freedman is looking for promising Encosta De Lago colt Smokin' Joey to progress to the Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 9 through Sunday's Carsales.Com.Au Hcp (1440m).

A brother to the former Freedman-trained Group One performer Our Smoking Joe, Smokin' Joey ran on well when fourth to Soul in the Group Two Danehill Stakes (1200m) on a heavy track at Flemington when resuming on September 4.

The colt won the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield at his debut on May 1 and had three runs in Queensland during the winter, finishing fifth, fourth and 10th to Pressday on each occasion in the Champagne Stakes, QTC Sires' Produce Stakes and TJ Smith Stakes.

"I am happy with everything he has done," Freedman said.

"His first preparation down here and in Brisbane was good, his first-up run in the Danehill was very good.

"He's going along all right, he's a real trier."

Freedman believes Smokin' Joey will be better suited as the distances get longer.

"I don't think he has got to his right trip yet either," he said.

The trainer has nominated him for the $1.5 million Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on October 30.
