As stable star Hay List continues his recovery from a leg infection, trainer John McNair is turning his focus to the rest of his team.

My Vegas and Royal Discretion will contest the Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) at Gosford but the trainer admits it will be tough.

Just as Hay List spent most of his campaign competing for second behind Black Caviar, McNair fears a similar scenario with Squamosa set to dominate the Gosford sprint.

My Vegas finished third in last year's Takeover Target (1200m) won by Border Rebel and McNair said he was primed for a good performance.

"He is similar to the way he was before last year's race if not better," McNair said.

"But I wish Squamosa wasn't there, I think we are all running for second.

"He is a well above average horse."

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Squamosa, runner-up in the Golden Rose in August last year, made a brilliant return to the track with a dominant victory in the June Stakes last Saturday week.

Waterhouse believes he is a potential Group One winner and has forecast a trip to next year's Royal Ascot carnival.

My Vegas is backing up from his sixth at Rosehill on Saturday and is on the 53kg limit while stablemate Royal Discretion, formerly with Waterhouse, carries 55.5kg.

Royal Discretion has not won since October 2008 but McNair believes he is still paying the penalty for his three-year-old form and his Group One third in the 2009 All-Aged Stakes won by Danleigh.

"He is a horse who has been rated on what he did two years ago," McNair said.

"He is a lovely horse and once he gets down in the weights he should be able to get back to winning form.

Brenton Avdulla will ride My Vegas while Chris O'Brien partners Royal Discretion.

McNair took both horses to Gosford to work on Tuesday morning and said he hoped the predicted wet weather stayed away.

"The track was just on the worse side of dead but could improve," he said.

"I would really like to see Royal Discretion on top of the ground."

The trainer continues to tend to Hay List who was ruled out of the Doomben 10,000 with the leg injury and infection which has persisted.

"He is picking up and the swelling has gone down," he said.

"We have been bandaging the leg at night and that seems to be controlling things."

While Hay List's recovery is taking longer than hoped, his younger half brother Sound Of The Ocean is thriving following his debut win on June 9 at Gosford.

"He has been nominated for Newcastle on Saturday but I think we will wait until next week and raise the bar with him at Canterbury," McNair said.
