Group One-placed three-year-old Squamosa remains three weeks away from racing despite a commanding barrier trial win on Monday.

Squamosa dominated his 1050m heat at Randwick against his own age but trainer Gai Waterhouse will wait until Boxing Day before starting the Golden Rose placegetter's run towards potential Magic Millions glory.

"It's not an ideal preparation but he's been in (work) a while now and he's a very powerful colt," Tulloch Lodge spokesman Mark Webbey said.

Squamosa, who also won a Warwick Farm trial on November 19, is slated to resume against older horses in a benchmark 85 race over 1100 metres at Randwick.

With an 89 rating to his name, Squamosa is expected to receive at least 58kg.

"The only other options we had were to run him against the open sprinters in the Razor Sharp next week or wait until the Carrington Stakes on New Year's Day," Webbey said.

"The Carrington would have been too close to the Magic Millions so we were left with Boxing Day."

Squamosa will head to the Gold Coast as one of the leading chances in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) on January 15.

He is expected to renew acquaintances in the $1 million race with the Melbourne-trained Toorak Toff.

At their only clash, Toorak Toff beat Squamosa in a photo finish to the Group One Golden Rose at Rosehill on August 28.

While Toorak Toff returned south with the lion's share of the Golden Rose purse, it was Squamosa who earned rave reviews after working at both ends of the race.

Squamosa was one of 10 trial winners for Waterhouse at Randwick.

Besides Squamosa, her haul included a win by Swift Alliance, the talented sprinter kept in work for a summer campaign despite his Salinger Stakes failure at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup carnival.
