An approach to advertising guru John Singleton almost two years ago at a yearling sale has landed trainer Matthew Smith his first win for the high-profile owner at Warwick Farm.

Ready Steady Vetti took out Wednesday's Carramar Handicap (1100m) by three-quarters of a length at just his second race start.

"This is my first horse for John and I'm very happy to be training for him," Smith said.

The Warwick Farm trainer revealed he approached Singleton at the 2009 Magic Millions sales on the Gold Coast which led to the opportunity to train Ready Steady Vetti.

"I asked Singo for a horse to train at the sales," Smith said.

"He said 'I'll get back to you', and one turned up. He's a nice horse too."

Smith said his operation was gaining momentum with a strong team and the acquisition of good horses, including those with high-profile owners such as Singleton.

He also trains talented filly Slow The Flow owned by retail boss Gerry Harvey.

Like Harvey, Singleton has proved a good owner to train for, Smith said.

"He's like Gerry (Harvey), they're great people to train for, they let you get on with training the horses," Smith said.

"When you get horses with high-profile owners there's always that much more pressure to make sure you produce but John's great to train for."

While Ready Steady Vetti is still progressing, Smith said the colt had good potential for the future and was shaping up as a sprinter.

"He's a nice, progressive horse, he's always worked well, he's just been a bit immature," Smith said.

"I'd like to get a bit of racing into him. He needs some racing so I'd like to give him a few runs this time of year and bring him back in the autumn."

While Ready Steady Vetti was Smith's first winner for Singleton, jockey Nash Rawiller has had plenty of experience riding for the owner in his role as stable jockey for Gai Waterhouse.

Waterhouse trains the bulk of the owner's horses including star mare More Joyous.

"I think he is a nice horse in the making," Rawiller said of Ready Steady Vetti.

Rawiller brought up a winning double later in the day when he guided the Waterhouse-trained Rhythm Of Dance to a narrow win in the Bass Hill Handicap (1300m).

Corey Brown also captured a double aboard the Joe Pride-trained Our Boy Lukas in the Lansdowne Handicap (1400m) and the Bob Thomsen-trained stayer Tiger Good in the Cartwright Handicap (2200m).
