Trainer Chris Waller is likely to bypass the William Reid Stakes with Shellscrape on Saturday in favour of the Oakleigh Plate a week later.

Waller accepted for the William Reid with Shellscrape but is hoping for a wet track if the sprinter is to take his place against the likes of Black Caviar and Nicconi.

"It's only fifty-fifty whether he'll run because it is more than likely that he'll run in the Oakleigh Plate ... he's a big chance of running in the Oakleigh Plate," Waller said.

"I think he's better suited under the handicap conditions of the Oakleigh Plate but we've simply put him in the William Reid hoping for some wet weather.

"I think our horse is equally as effective on a good and a wet track but I think others aren't as good (on a wet track).

"It's a Group One and although we might be facing a scratching fee, I think it's important we give him every chance to win that Group One because he's still a colt."

Shellscrape has won five of his 15 starts and is unbeaten in three attempts on slow tracks, including a 4-1/4 length win in the Group Two Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Randwick in October.

The colt has had three starts in Group One races, finishing third in both the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) last spring and the Lightning Stakes (1000m) first-up on January 30.

He also finished fifth to Denman in last year's Golden Rose (1400m).

Waller is confident the colt has what it takes to win a Group One this preparation.

"There's starting to be a few offers floating around, still nothing has happened yet, but being a colt if he can get a Group One, which I think he will get, it's going to help him," he said.

Waller said Dan Nikolic had been booked to ride Shellscrape on Saturday.

Fellow jockey Craig Williams has been cleared to ride multiple Group One winner Sniper's Bullet in the William Reid after successfully appealing against a careless riding suspension.

Williams was outed by stewards for 12 meetings over his ride aboard Carbon Trader at Caulfield on Saturday but that was overturned on Wednesday when he took his case to the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board.

The top jockey steered Sniper's Bullet to the first of his three Group One wins in the 2007 Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm.

Sniper's Bullet is a $13 chance for Saturday's feature with TAB Sportsbet while Shellscrape is at $10.

Early betting is dominated by unbeaten filly Black Caviar who is the $1.80 favourite to win her first Group One despite drawing the outside barrier in the field of nine.
