Rehabilitated five-year-old Royal Discretion will be on trial for Brisbane's feature winter sprints when he resumes in the Listed The Straight Six at Flemington.

Formerly trained by Gai Waterhouse, the multiple stakeswinner has pleased his new trainer Peter Morgan who has worked tirelessly for the last three months ironing out the sprinter's problems.

"There is a little bit of wear and tear everywhere and we have had to nurse him along for some time to get him feeling good," Morgan said.

"His back was probably his major issue so we have taken it a bit easy with him but I'm happy with him."

Morgan said Royal Discretion did so well that keeping the gelding's weight in check had been difficult.

He had initially hoped to run Royal Discretion earlier this month in Adelaide's Group One The Goodwood (1200m) but ran out of time getting him right.

He said his goals were now the Doomben 10,000 (1350m) on May 29 and the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on June 12 should he run up to expectations at Flemington on Saturday.

"He is feeling pretty good in himself at the moment and this race will give us a guide on him," Morgan said.

"He is not fully wound up but if he runs really well he will go up to Brisbane for the 10,000 and the Stradbroke."

He said race pressure would ultimately determine how well Royal Discretion had recovered from his back ailment, both physically and mentally.

"You just don't know if they are going to put in or not because sometimes they remember the pain from last time and just don't go," Morgan said.

But he said the early signs were encouraging that Royal Discretion was on track after a strong gallop at Seymour last Monday.

"His last furlong (200m) he seemed to get into gear and get cracking," Morgan said.

"It was only trackwork but he seems to be going all right."

Royal Discretion has won six of his 27 starts with four of them at stakes level, his most recent the Group Three Jayco Cup at Caulfield in October 2008.

He also won the Group Three South Pacific Classic at Randwick, the Listed Hawkesbury Guineas and Listed Darby Munro Quality.

TAB Sportsbet has him safe in early markets on the third line of betting at $12 for The Straight Six (1200m) with Victoria Handicap winner Orbit Express and El Mandon.

Goodwood runner-up Catapulted is odds-on at $1.95 ahead of the highly-promising Eight Bills ($8) who has won six of his eight starts.
