A sparkling barrier trial win by Rothesay last week has convinced trainer Gerald Ryan the four-year-old is back on track for Group One glory this spring.

A virus kept Rothesay out of the Epsom Handicap but he has fully recovered and will run in the 1400m open handicap at Rosehill on Saturday ahead of a tilt at the Emirates Stakes on November 6, the final day of the Melbourne Cup carnival.

Rothesay is the winner of four of his eight starts and his placings include a second to glamour mare More Joyous in the Group Two Sebring Sprint on September 11 just before the virus struck.

"He had his first gallop the reverse way of going on Saturday and handled it well," Ryan said.

"All going well he will go to Melbourne after Saturday for the Emirates.

"He seems to be over the virus but we won't make a final decision until after Saturday."

Ryan makes no secret of his admiration for Rothesay who missed the spring three-year-old races last year when he bled during his fourth in the Roman Consul.

He had the mandatory three-month break and came back in the autumn.

After being placed in two Sydney starts, Rothesay beat talented Brisbane horse Our Lukas in the Lord Mayor's Cup (1615m) at Eagle Farm on May 22, his warm-up to an emphatic Queensland Guineas (1600m) win.

There were 19 entries for the open handicap including Group One winner Mentality, last-start Rosehill winner Macknuckle and international performer Dao Dao.

A dozen juveniles have been nominated for the 1100m two-year-old race including Invest who has also been entered for the Inglis Banner (1000m) at Moonee Valley.

The Dehere filly is out of 2003 Flight Stakes winner Unearthly and has had two barrier trials to prepare for her racetrack debut.

Invest's stablemate By The Hour is also entered for the $250,000 race at Moonee Valley.
