Boom colt Smart Missile will go into uncharted waters on two fronts when he lines up in the $1 million Group One Golden Rose on Saturday.

The three-year-old has never raced second-up and he has never tackled 1400 metres.

"It will be interesting to see," trainer Anthony Cummings said.

"It's a little bit of a question mark the 1400 metres, it's his first test at that but I'm pretty happy with how he has come out of his first-up run."

Smart Missile has only raced three times winning the Breeders Plate (1000m) on debut last October before being put away then returning in the autumn to beat Sepoy in the Todman Stakes (1200m).

He was sensationally scratched at the barrier before the Golden Slipper then was ruled out of the remainder of the autumn with niggling problems.

He returned at Rosehill last month in breathtaking fashion, coming from a seemingly impossible position at the tail of the field to win the Run To The Rose (1200m) by a neck over Foxwedge with Helmet third.

The two minor placegetters will again be among his major rivals in the Golden Rose for which Smart Missile is the clear $2.20 favourite.

Connections of Up And Coming Stakes winner Manawanui have indicated they will pay the $50,000 late entry fee to start him with regular jockey Glyn Schofield to ride.

Glen Boss will again make the trip to Sydney to partner Smart Missile who had a hitout at Randwick on Saturday morning and will wind up his Golden Rose preparations with another gallop on Tuesday.

"He had a gallop (Saturday) morning, nothing too serious, and he did the same last Thursday," Cummings said.

"He will gallop again on Tuesday and it will be interesting to see what he does there."

Cummings said Smart Missile was likely to be his only runner in the Golden Rose although he was still weighing up his options for a couple of stablemates.

Helmet is second pick with TAB Sportsbet at $5.50 with Manawanui at $8.50 and Nathan Berry's mount Aeronautical at $9.

The John O'Shea-trained Foxwedge, to be ridden by New Zealand superstar James McDonald, is also being kept safe at $10.

Gai Waterhouse confirmed Just The Tonic would not go to the race and would instead head to the Spring Stakes at Newcastle while neither Patinack Farm nor Chris Waller are expected to be represented in the Golden Rose.
