Sydney stayer Road To Rock ramped up his attack on the Australian Cup with a timely win in the Sportingbet Gold Cup at Caulfield.

Trainer Anthony Cummings said the four-year-old's 3-1/4 length win over Down Under Boy and 2007 VRC Oaks winner Arapaho Miss on Saturday was the gelding's best and a taste of things to come.

Jockey Damien Oliver said Road To Rock had earned his place in the Australian Cup and TAB Sportsbet chopped his quote from $15 to $9.

He joins Master O'Reilly and Baughurst on the second line of betting behind St George Stakes winner Theseo ($2.25).

"Theseo will be hard to beat but he (Road To Rock) is worthy of taking him on," said Oliver who is yet to win an Australian Cup.

Northerly is the only horse in the last 15 years to come through the Sportingbet Gold Cup, better known as the Victoria Gold Cup, and win the Australian Cup.

He won the Australian Cup in 2001 and 2003 after finishing second in the Gold Cup in 2001 and third in 2003.

Cummings said Road To Rock had improved from his second-up win at Moonee Valley two weeks ago and would peak for the Australian Cup.

"The Valley run was always going to be the tough one second-up with a step up in distance and he had to work hard all the way," Cummings said.

"It was pleasing to see him stick his head out and show where his ticker is at and his head is at.

"We saw a bit more of that today with him coming away from the field and winning pretty comfortably.

"It was easily his best win, a dominant win, and he will improve again."

Cummings said the Australian Cup had been the plan for Road To Rock since his finished a gallant fourth at weight-for-age in the Sandown Classic (2400m) last November.

"We thought this race was a better lead-up for him than last week's St George Stakes and he has done the job for us," Cummings said.

"We are looking forward to next week."
